MIRI, July 17: Eight anglers survived after their kayaks were overwhelmed by strong waves at about two to four nautical miles off Lutong Beach early this morning.
According to the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department operation centre in a statement today, seven of the victims were found floating and rescued off the Lutong beach, while the eighth angler in his 30’s was discovered at 11.46am.
The anglers had gone out to sea on kayaks from Lutong Beach at Bayshore area around 6am today for recreational fishing as early as 6am.
En route to their intended fishing spot, sudden strong waves capsized their kayaks.
Upon receiving an alert on the incident, firefighters from both Lutong and Miri Central fire stations together with Miri Civil Defence (APM) personnel were deployed to the scene for a rescue operation.
The operation ended at 12.30pm. — DayakDaily
