KUCHING, Feb 13: A public learning institution located at Jalan Kolej here is the focal point of a new Covid-19 cluster dubbed the Jalan Kolej Cluster, with 26 cases confirmed so far.
The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) in a statement today said the cluster was detected when a total of four trainers experiencing symptoms underwent Covid-19 screening at a health facility on Feb 7.
“These index cases also have a history of returning from leave in their respective States in Peninsular Malaysia and returning back to the institution on Feb 5, 2022.
“Following that, the infection was believed to spread from social interaction among the trainers and their close contacts,” it said.
A total of 52 people were screened whereby 26 people tested positive for Covid-19 including the index cases, and 26 tested negative.
The positive patients in this cluster are currently undergoing isolation and treatment at Sarawak General Hospital (SGH), Kuching Covid-19 Assessment Centre (CAC) and Kuching Low-Risk Treatment Centre (PKRC).
With the addition of the Jalan Kolej Cluster, there are now two active clusters in the State with the other being the Kampung Semeba Cluster.
SDMC also reported that Sarawak registered 201 new Covid-19 cases today, an increase from 186 cases reported yesterday.
By district, Kuching took the lead in terms of number with 72 cases in total, followed by Sibu (47), Miri (41), Sarikei (6), Lawas (6), Serian (5), Limbang (4), Kapit (4), Samarahan (4), Bintulu (3), Tanjung Manis (2), and Kanowit (2) while Mukah, Betong, Meradong, Marudi and Subis recorded one case each.
Of the total cases, 113 are in Category 1 (no symptoms) and 86 cases are in Category 2 (mild symptoms).
Meanwhile, the remaining two cases are classified as critical, involving one Category 3 patient who developed pneumonia but can still breathe on their own and one Category 4 patient who needs oxygen supply. — DayakDaily
