KUCHING, Feb 17: The Sarawak Education Department (JPNS) has appointed a total of 1,312 new teachers (on contract of service) to address the ongoing shortage of educators across the region.
In a TVS news report, Sarawak’s Education director, Omar Mahli, stated that the newly appointed teachers have been given 30 days, starting from Feb 13, to report for duty.
He expressed hope that all newly appointed teachers would report within the given timeframe.
“Some of the teachers previously worked elsewhere and have resigned, which may take some time.
“For instance, teachers from Kuching who have been placed in remote areas like Baram, Belaga, and Kapit may require extra time to arrange their travel, secure housing, and make other necessary preparations. Nevertheless, we hope all of them will report soon,” he told reporters after attending the first day of school for the 2025/2026 session at Sekolah Kebangsaan Haji Baki today.
Regarding the possibility of new teachers rejecting their appointments, Omar acknowledged that, as in previous years, some may choose not to accept the offer.
“When teachers are posted to schools far from their current residences, they may have doubts about whether to accept or decline the offer. However, we strongly encourage the new teachers to embrace this opportunity, as it allows them to contribute to education in Sarawak. Not everyone will be posted to urban areas,” he advised.
Omar also urged the teachers to make the most of their assignments in rural areas, gain valuable experience, and return to urban centres enriched with new insights. — DayakDaily
