SAMALAJU, Nov 14: Fire safety awareness in schools is important as it teaches students to protect lives and property.

Samalaju Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) chief Hashim Moshidi said the knowledge gained on how to prevent and respond to fires, and how to promote fire safety and fire prevention awareness in the community can be utilised any time, especially during a disaster.

Seven firefighters led by Hashim recently conducted a fire safety talk and taught students how to use a fire extinguisher and put out a kitchen fire at SK Kampung Nyalau, Bintulu.

The 147 students and teachers participating were also given information on security and preventive measures and showed how to create an escape plan that will ensure everyone knows what to do and where to go, in order to get out quickly and safely in the event of a fire.

“Nothing cuts down the risk of fire loss like education. So we must arm our students with the knowledge and skills they need to approach fire safety effectively,” Hashim added. — DayakDaily
