KUCHING, March 13: Was there really an earthquake in Kuching this morning?

Were you also awakened from your sleep at about 6.30am by an earsplitting bang and after that felt the seconds-long tremor?

Some residents of Mile 17 to Mile 22 including Padawan, Batu Kawa, Serian, Kota Samarahan, Siburan and Asajaya had reported the same experience on social media today.

Some speculated it could have been an earthquake, but an earthquake in Kuching, Sarawak?

Meanwhile, some netizens thought the tremor might be from a quarry blast nearby, but noted it was an odd hour to blow up rocks if that was true.

Based on an earthquake tracker online, there had been zero earthquakes of the magnitude of 1.5 or greater detected near Sarawak in the past 24 hours, or even the past year.

A Sarawak Meteorology Department spokesperson later confirmed that the commotion was not due to an earthquake, but possibly some activities in a quarry nearby.

The spokesperson said the detected waves did not match those indicating earthquake activity. — DayakDaily
