KUCHING, April 5: Dudong assemblyman Dato Sri Tiong King Sing is urging the incoming Sibu District police chief to immediately look into stopping incidents of grave desecration in Sibu.
He noted that this is not the first time that incidences of graves being disturbed and desecrated were reported with graves exposed and even coffins being burned.
“At the end of March, the victims’ families had lodged a police report at the Sibu police but received no attention from them.
“So I communicated this ‘grave’ matter to the new coming Sibu district police chief to immediately look into stopping these outrageous acts otherwise the gangsters involved will be emboldened to continue committing their crimes and cause more social problems,” he said in a statement today.
Tiong who is also the Bintulu MP alleged that the relevant officers did not take the necessary actions immediately after receiving the first report.
“Seeing the initial crimes were not being taken seriously nor being investigated, the wrongdoers are further encouraged to repeat their offenses and now, seven graves have been destroyed in the Jalan Bukit Aup cemetery in Sibu,” he added.
He also condemned the perpetrators and urged the authorities to take action as soon as possible so that the families and their deceased relatives can be at peace again.
“I also urge families who face similar crimes done to their relatives’ gravesites to make the necessary report to the police in order to bring the criminals to justice,” he emphasised.
The post of Sibu police chief has been vacant for months. Deputy Chief Supt Dr Collin Babat is currently the acting police chief.
The post will soon be taken up by the current Bintulu OCPD Supt Zulkipli Suhaili on April 25. He will also be promoted to the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP). — DayakDaily
