SIBU, June 27: The State Education Department (JPNS) has been urged to hold a dialogue session with parents facing financial distress following the pandemic.

Dudong assemblyman Dato Sri Tiong King Sing said after the Covid-19 pandemic, many problems arose, and government employees and officials must know of the problems faced by parents.

“This dialogue session is our way of approaching parents to identify problems they’re facing and find solutions,” he said at the Yayasan Sarawak School Uniform Assistance presentation at SJKC Thai Kwang today.

The event was organised by Yayasan Sarawak in collaboration with the Dudong Service Centre, Sibu Division Resident Office and District Office, and the State Education Department.

Tiong, who is also the Bintulu MP, said he is ready to help prepare the venue for the dialogue session.

“We do not want this problem to continue until parents cannot send their children to school,” he added.

Tiong also urged Yayasan Sarawak to continue the existing assistance to reduce parents’ burdens.

At the event, 649 primary and secondary school students in the Dudong State constituency were selected to receive RM200 cash vouchers from Yayasan Sarawak to buy school uniforms.

Of the number, 368 were secondary school students and 281 were primary school pupils.

“Although this assistance is not much, but at least it can help ease the burden of parents, especially those from the B40 group. We know the current economic situation is not so good.

“Such initiatives from Yayasan Sarawak should be continued in the future,” he explained.

At the function, Tiong also announced an allocation of RM150,000 to SJKC Thai Kwang for the maintenance of the school. — DayakDaily
