Dudong rep: SMC abattoir’s reopening expected next weekend

KUCHING, March 18: The opening of Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) abattoir’s is expected next weekend, said Dudong assemblyman Dato Seri Tiong King Sing.

According to Tiong, who is also Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) president, he had urged both SMC and the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) to work together to speed up the process.

“I called the DVS today and urged them to communicate clearly what upgrades are needed and to work closely with the municipal council to acquire them and installed.


“I also spoke to Clarence Ting, the SMC Chairman to expedite the upgrade works on the equipment to be done next week,” he explained.

With the cooperation from all involved, Tiong also hoped that these projects can be completed as soon as possible.

“I also urged the authorities to issue the standard operating procedures (SOPs) that need to be implemented following the reopening of the slaughterhouses as soon as possible.

“We need to ensure that all pig farmers are clear on the various procedures that need to be followed in order to avoid any confusion, hiccups or problems going forward,” he said.

Meanwhile, Tiong conveyed his gratitude to DVS, SMC and all other parties involved for their dedication and cooperation to tackle the swine fever issue.

He reminds the farmers that they must cooperate closely and comply with all the regulations drawn up by the authorities to prevent the disease from coming back in waves.

He said it will not do anyone any good if the slaughterhouses are to be forced shut again if that occurs.
