KUCHING, Aug 3: Sibu’s successful hosting of the Sibu International RC Powerboat Race River Challenge 2026 has demonstrated its capability to stage world-class sporting events, raising hopes of attracting more international competitions and even a future Sarawak Regatta Challenge.
In a Facebook post, Dudong assemblyman Dato Sri Tiong King Sing said that the participation of competitors from Brunei Darussalam, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), together with Sibu’s previous recognition in the Malaysia Book of Records for the Most RC Powerboats in a Single Event, reflects the town’s growing reputation as an international sporting destination.
Tiong, who is also the Bintulu MP and the federal Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, said the achievement demonstrates Sibu’s capability and capacity to host world-class sporting events.
“Events of this scale do more than showcase sporting excellence. They strengthen sports tourism, introduce Sibu’s unique culture and warm hospitality to international visitors, and generate positive economic opportunities for local businesses, hotels, restaurants, transport operators, and many other sectors within the community,” he said.
He further believed that Sibu should continue building on this momentum by attracting and organising more international events. He said that with early planning, strong collaboration, and the support of all stakeholders, there is great potential to establish a Sarawak regatta challenge in the future.
“Such an event would not only elevate Sarawak’s sporting profile but also encourage more athletes and local communities to prepare, participate, and grow together while positioning Sarawak as a premier destination for international sporting events,” he said.
Speaking on the event, he said that RC powerboat racing goes beyond tourism and economic opportunities as it also contributes to human capital development.
He elaborated that it inspires young people to explore technology, engineering, innovation, and technical skills while cultivating discipline, teamwork, resilience, and sportsmanship through healthy competition, which he noted are important qualities that will help nurture a generation capable of driving future innovation and progress.
“I hope the success of this year’s championship will inspire more international sporting events in Sibu and further strengthen Sarawak’s position as a leading destination for sports tourism in the region,” he said. — DayakDaily
