SINIAWAN, Nov 16: Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has assured that the road linking Kuching to Bau will be upgraded into a dual-carriageway in three years’ time.

He said the project, which he had already approved, will be tendered out in April next year.

“Don’t worry, Miro, (it) will be there. (It) will be there (in) three years’ time. Then we can develop areas between Bau and Kuching,” said Abang Johari when officiating at the Sarawakku Sayang program held at Siniawan old town here today.

Earlier in his speech, Serembu assemblyman Miro Simuh requested the Sarawak government to expedite the project as the road is recording extremely high traffic every day.

Miro said according to the Sarawak Road Safety Department (JKJR), the Kuching-Bau road records over 4,000 vehicles per day.

“Road accidents happen almost every week and half of them can cause casualties. So, I really urge that the project be expedited,” he said.

Meanwhile, Miro also brought up the need for Bau district to have six more village headmen (‘penghulu’) as currently one headman is taking care of 19 to 20 villages.

Additionally, he proposed that Serembu have another secondary school as the current SK Paku, which is supposed to house only about 1,000 students, has over 1,800 students now.

“School sessions are separated into two now because there are not enough classrooms for everyone. That’s why we are desperate in this matter,” he added.
