SARATOK, July 30: A tense situation unfolded in Saratok town late yesterday afternoon when a lorry driver, believed to be under the influence of alcohol, drove recklessly before being apprehended by police at a petrol station.
According to a TVS news report, the incident occurred around 5.10pm as a Crime Prevention Patrol team from Saratok Police Station was conducting Ops Lejang along KM419 of the Pan Borneo Highway, near the main junction to Saratok.
Saratok District Police chief DSP Mathew Manggie said officers initially noticed a suspiciously parked Nissan lorry by the roadside.
“As officers approached to carry out an inspection, the driver suddenly started the vehicle and sped off dangerously, striking a road sign before finally stopping at a petrol station in Pekan Saratok,” he said.
The 48-year-old suspect was successfully detained at the scene. Preliminary investigations revealed that he was believed to be driving under the influence of alcohol.
He was subsequently brought to the Traffic Division of the Saratok Police Station for further investigation.
The case is being investigated under Section 42(1) and Section 45C of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving and driving under the influence of alcohol.
Police have reminded the public never to drive while intoxicated, as such behaviour is not only illegal but can endanger innocent lives. — DayakDaily
