MIRI, Dec 13: The number of drug-related arrests in Miri Division has seen a notable increase over the past 11 months, totaling 1,026 individuals detained for various drug-related offenses.

This marks a 30 per cent rise compared to the corresponding period last year, according to Miri OCPD ACP Alexson Naga Chabu.

Speaking at the Miri Police Headquarters IPD monthly assembly on Wednesday, ACP Alexson highlighted the increase in drug-related arrests, disclosing that 789 individuals were detained for such offenses during the same period in 2022.

Despite the surge in drug-related cases, the overall crime index in Miri has shown a two percent reduction from January to November this year.

Additionally, he noted an increase in commercial crimes, reporting 365 cases during the period of January to November this year, compared to 314 cases in the previous year.

The authorities are likely to intensify efforts to address the rising trends in drug-related offenses and commercial crimes in the region. — DayakDaily
