KUCHING, July 19: Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian believes that the celebration of Sarawak Independence Day on July 22 will gain momentum in the years to come.
Dr Sim said the spirit of advocating for Sarawak’s rights was ignited by late Chief Minister Pehin Sri Adenan Satem and continued by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.
“I am glad to note that Sarawakians especially the NGOs are responding positively. And I believe that the celebration will gain momentum in years to come,” said Dr Sim at Sarawak Flag Distribution Event organised by Federation of Chinese Associations of Kuching, Samarahan and Serian Divisions held at SJK(C) Chung Hua Primary School No 3 this morning.
Meanwhile, Federation of Chinese Associations of Kuching, Samarahan and Serian Divisions president Dato Richard Wee said the event was held in conjunction with 722 Sarawak Independence Day.
“About 10,000 Sarawak flags and stickers were given away to students of the nine schools through the respective Committee of the Management Boards of both the primary and secondary schools.
“We are doing this to raise awareness among primary and secondary students on Sarawak’ history, its rights and entitlements as well as to enhance the spirit of Sarawak,” said Wee.
He said the federation will go one step further as the day approaches by giving away more flags and stickers to the public tomorrow at SJK(C) Chung Hua Primary School No 3 carpark at 5 pm.
“We urge all Sarawakians to celebrate Sarawak Day in our own way to mark the occasion. We encourage all Sarawakians to hang their flags on the day – July 22, to show Sarawak’s spirit and our love for Sarawak,” said Wee. — DayakDaily
