KUCHING, May 6: Establishing a technical excellence centre will not only provide technical training for the people and capable human resources for the country, but also increase the income of socio-economically disadvantaged families, said Minister for Local Government and Housing Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian.

Dr Sim who is also Batu Kawah assemblyman, said this will help to improve the quality of life of the people through such upgrading of basic facilities.

“The Sarawak government has continued promoting vocational education since the late Chief Minister Adenan’s (Pehin Sri Adenan Satem) era besides providing scholarships for students to further their studies to successfully enter college through the Yayasan Scholarship.

“The Sarawak government does not neglect graduates who are unable to continue their studies. They will provide them with short-term vocational training courses with the establishment of such a technical excellence centre,” he added.

He said this at the Centre for Technical Excellence (Centexs) and State Multimedia Authority (SMA) Safari Batu Kawa 2019 event at Dewan Kampung Sinar Budi Baru, Batu Kawah on April 4.

Dr Sim pointed out that through Centexs, students can choose to pursue courses in various fields such as digital, cultural heritage, technology, oil and gas, and electronics. As long as they complete the course, they can obtain international certification to suit the needs of different workplaces.

Therefore, he hoped that Sarawakians can grasp these opportunities offered by the government and enrol in technical courses especially people in rural areas who can increase their family’s income through professional careers.

Meanwhile Centexs Chief Executive Officer Syeed Mohd Hussien Wan Abdul Rahman said that the centre currently offers 28 courses in six fields, including oil and gas, electronics, ports, construction, textiles and hospitality. In the field of electronics, he added that all courses are conducted over a short-term period.

He said that the centre is currently cooperating with global mobile phone manufacturing giant Huawei to provide students with a number of digital data courses. Students can obtain international certification issued by Huawei.

Syeed Mohd Hussien added that the Safari event had been to Mukah, Betong, Lawas, Lundu, and now Batu Kawah.

In addition, Centexs also held a Community Technology Outreach Programme (CTOP) in the visited community.

Also present were Batu Kitang assemblyman and Padawan Municipal Council chairman Lo Khere Chiang, his deputy Datuk Ahmad Ibrahim and Datin Enn Ong. — DayakDaily
