KUCHING, Jan 3: Ten families who were displaced by fires at RPR Batu Kawah and Desa Wira recently have received monetary aid from the state government to rebuild their damaged houses.

Minister of Local Government and Housing Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian presented the cheques to the victims when he visited them on New Year’s Eve.

The money is from the welfare ministry as well as from the minor rural project (MRP) fund for Rumah Rakyat Miskin Sarawak for Batu Kawah constituency.

Of the 10 affected families, nine were from the RPR Batu Kawah low-cost housing. The fire at RPR Batu Kawah occurred on Nov 20 last year, while the one at Desa Wira was on Nov 25.

“These grants would allow the victims to complete the rebuilding of their homes as soon as possible. The degree of burnout varies, where some of the houses were razed to the ground.

“Some of the victims are currently putting up with their friends and relatives,” said Dr Sim in a statement today.

Dr Sim, who is also Batu Kawah assemblyman, expressed content that construction on some of the houses had begun. — DayakDaily
