KUCHING, Aug 1: Sarawak Deputy Premier and Batu Kawa assemblyman Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian has allocated RM84.7 million for 130 drainage system projects in Batu Kawah constituency from 2016 to 2022.
Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Batu Kawah Service Center in a statement today, said this excluded the RM140 million flood mitigation projects for Batu Kawah in which some projects are about to proceed to open tender process following the completion of designs by consultants.
“There are also additional RM160 million allocation for Batu Kawah constituency’s flood mitigation projects under Sarawak government’s 12th Malaysia Plan mid-term (until 2025) reviews,” Dr Sim reportedly said during his recent visit at Batu Kawah Stapok Resettlement area’s RM 884,469 open tender drainage works project.
Dr Sim who is also Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government (MPHLG) further reiterated that more development projects can be implemented in a shorter period of time if the Federal government’s Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) or Ministry of Local Government can allocate additional funding.
He added that upgrading drainage systems in residential areas is a complex and challenging project, especially in some areas such as Taman Desa Wira, Stapok Resettlement area and Batu Kawah low-cost housing area, of which earth drains have not been upgraded in the past few decades.
Thus, he said, the drainage system project needs to be carried out step-by-step and in phases to upgrade the earth drains to concrete drains.
At the same time, he reminded contractors that they must fulfill their contracts and complete the work on time, otherwise they would be dealt with, including blacklisted. — DayakDaily
