SPAOH, Nov 11: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) candidate Dr Richard Rapu says he will represent all races in Betong if he is elected during the 15th General Election (GE15) on Nov 19.
Deputy Premier and GPS election director Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas emphasised this in dismissing allegations by certain quarters that Dr Richard would only be a Member of Parliament (MP) for the majority Iban.
“I have impressed (this point) upon him and I am very confident he will treat everyone fairly and equally.
“Dr Richard himself realises that he needs to be fair in serving all,” he said in a statement today.
He raised this during a gathering with Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Bukit Saban branch leaders and members from several Malay villages here today.
Uggah pointed out that Dr Richard, who was appointed the political secretary to the Premier of Sarawak this year, had been with him for eight years since he was a member of the Federal cabinet.
“In 2016, when I moved (back) to Sarawak, he was with me until he was nominated as the candidate.
“He too has been a very regular companion during my walkabouts here. I am sure the need to be fair and to treat and serve everyone equally has been ingrained in him.
“So the non-Iban voters have absolutely nothing to fear or to be concerned about,” he said.
At the function, Uggah also expressed his and the people’s gratitude to Datuk Robert Lawson Chuat for his immense contributions when he was a two-term Bukit Saban assemblyman and later as Betong MP from 2018 to 2022.
He also thanked him for his decision to step down to make way for a new and younger leader to take over.
