KUCHING, Sept 28: Leaders from Sarawak have extended their condolences to former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and his family following the death of his wife, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali, today.
In a Facebook post, Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak, Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, and his wife, Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi, expressed their condolences and appreciation for the late Dr Siti Hasmah’s contributions and services to the medical field and public health, as well as her contributions to maternal and child healthcare and her services to rural communities.
In the same statement, they prayed for Dr Mahathir and his family to be granted strength and resilience in facing the loss.
Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, on behalf of the Sarawak government, also extended condolences to Dr Mahathir on the passing of his wife.
“We pray that her soul rests among the faithful, and we hope that the family will be granted patience and strength in facing the loss of Dr Siti Hasmah,” he said during his address at the officiation ceremony of the Sarawak Agrofest 2026 at Bintulu Old Airport today.
Federal Works Minister and Kapit MP, Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi, described Dr Hasmah’s passing as a profound loss felt not just by her family and friends, but also by Malaysians who knew her as a woman of grace, humility, and compassion who was always close to the community.
“Throughout her life, the late Tun Dr Siti Hasmah devoted herself to the country, particularly in the fields of healthcare, the welfare of women and children, and community service. Her character, contributions and service have become an important part of the nation’s history and will continue to be remembered.
“Beyond being a prominent figure, she will also be remembered as a wife, mother, grandmother, and a source of strength and devoted companion to Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad throughout his life and service to the country.
“In this time of deep sorrow, I pray that Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and his entire family will be granted strength, resilience and peace of mind as they cope with the loss of their beloved family member,” said Nanta.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said that the government has accorded Dr Siti Hasmah a state funeral.
According to Bernama, he directed Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar and Chief of Defence Forces General Tan Sri Malek Razak Sulaiman to assist with funeral arrangements and conduct.
At the same time, he also extended his condolences to Dr Mahathir and his family on Dr Siti Hasmah’s passing.
Dr Siti Hasmah passed away at the National Heart Institute (IJN) at the age of 100 this morning. — DayakDaily
