SIBU, July 3: The raising of white flags to signal one is running out of food supply must be stopped as it is not ingrained in the local culture, said Sibu Division Disaster Management Committee coordinator Dr Annuar Rapaee.
The white flag movement started in Lai Chee Lane before spreading to areas nearby which included Jalan Tiong Hua and Jalan Hua Khiew here.
In setting the matter straight at his Facebook live today, Dr Annuar wanted this movement to stop before it spread to the whole town.
According to the Nangka assemblyman, there are many kind people here, including non governmental organisations (NGOs) that are always ready to help when approached.
“In Sibu there are many kind people and I am sure they are willing to help. There are also NGOs, Welfare Department, mosques, churches and temples where people can approach them instead of raising the white flag.
“We need to work together to overcome the Covid-19 pandemic so that when things get back to normal, the livelihood of the people can become better,” he said.
The State Government, he said had responded to look into the welfare of the people affected by the pandemic by distributing food aid under Sarawakku Sayang Special Assistance (BKSS) three times since last year.
Besides that those under B40 group can also apply for the six-month RM200 financial aid under BKSS 6.0.
With the Federal Government allocating RM300,000 to each parliamentary constituency for the food aid, he encouraged those who are in need to apply.
“In Sibu we have two parliamentary constituencies of Lanang where the MP is Alice Lau and Bandar Sibu under Oscar Ling. Those who need food aid can apply,” he said.
