KUCHING, June 22: Deputy Prime Minister and federal Minister of Rural and Regional Development, Datuk Patinggi Dr Ahmad Zahid, attended a groundbreaking ceremony for the road project from Kampung Kupang to the Jalan Bajau junction in Saratok today.

According to the Sarawak Information Department (JaPen), the project, which is under the Rural Road Programme (JALB) via the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development with a current cost of RM122.5 million, involves upgrading the existing road to a paved road spanning 19.9 kilometres, along with the construction of five bridges.

This new road will benefit approximately 5,000 residents in Kampung Kupang, Rumah Rabiah, Rumah Ganing, Rumah Rengan/Selambong, Rumah Lakon, Rumah Anau, SK Sungai Entebu, SK Nanga Abu, and Rumah Bajau Baru.

The project aims to enhance rural road connectivity, reduce travel time to Saratok Market, and provide a safer and more comfortable route for villagers and road users.

It is accessible via Jalan Bajau, about eight kilometres from the Pan Borneo Highway and 43 kilometres from Betong.

The project commenced on January 14, 2025, and is expected to be fully completed by September 13, 2027. — DayakDaily
