KUCHING, Jan 26: Several major electricity generation projects are being planned to address Sabah’s energy supply issues, including a proposal to purchase electricity from Sarawak this year, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof says.

In a news report by Bernama, Fadillah, who is also Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (Petra), said that this is based on the information submitted by the Energy Commission of Sabah (EcoS).

He further explained that the Federal government, through Petra, has allocated RM102.9 million for the execution and completion of projects aimed at increasing the electricity supply in Sabah this year.

Aside from that, he said the planned projects include the development of a new 100MW power plant in 2026 and 2027, as well as the development of a large-scale 100MW solar farm next year.

Overall, these large-scale electricity projects are expected to increase Sabah’s electricity reserve margin to 30 per cent by 2030.

“With the strategic approach by the Sabah government to enhance generation capacity, the Federal government believes that the electricity supply issue in Sabah can be reduced,” he was quoted as saying while speaking at the Sabah Electricity Community programme and the joint Christmas 2024 and Chinese New Year 2025 Open House today.

“After the handover of the regulatory power over the electricity supply in Sabah, I hope that the state government will always be committed to addressing issues related to electricity supply services, thereby meeting the increasing demand for electricity in this state,” he said.

He stated that the Federal government, through Petra, is prepared to collaborate and provide guidance should Sabah require assistance or advice.

Also present at the event were Deputy Chief Minister III Datuk Shahelmey Yahya, Sabah Rural Development Minister Datuk Jahid Jahim, Sabah Assistant Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, and Sabah Electricity chairman Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau. – DayakDaily
