SIBU, Feb 17: Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has cautioned against political duplicity, stressing that leaders must be transparent in their disagreements and resolve issues openly for the greater good.

In his speech at the Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Chinese New Year celebration at a hotel today, Abang Johari emphasised that the strength of any party is lies in the unity and solidarity of its members and leaders.

“The party must always come before the individual. When we join a party, we unite under a common platform and goal—to serve the people and drive positive change for Sarawak and the country,” he said.

He warned against political dishonesty, recalling his message at the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Convention: “Don’t say one thing in front and say another thing at the back—that is dangerous. If you disagree, say it in front and trash it out.”

Abang Johari commended Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) for its strong leadership and internal trust.

“GPS has managed to govern Sarawak effectively, building trust not only within the coalition but also across the member parties—PBB, SUPP, Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS), and Progressive Democratic Party (PDP),” he said.

Abang Johari praised SUPP under Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian for strengthening the party, noting its recovery and growing influence.

However, he cautioned that political parties risk becoming obsolete if they fail to adapt to changing times, citing examples from India and Japan. He also referenced a Malaysian party with generational leadership control, warning that internal strife and lack of trust can weaken a party.

“A party without trust will weaken. It’s crucial to nurture young leaders who can navigate an evolving political landscape,” he added.

Addressing the role of technology in politics, Abang Johari highlighted the influence of artificial intelligence (AI) in shaping political narratives. “Even US President Donald Trump can send greetings in Mandarin. What if one day, my face appears saying, ‘Don’t vote for PBB’? That’s our future challenge,” he remarked.

He stressed that long-established parties like SUPP and PBB—now celebrating its 53rd year—must plan for proper succession.

“When the time comes, leaders must pass the baton to their successors, but the party must remain strong to continue serving the community,” he said.

Abang Johari also outlined Sarawak’s recent achievements, including the acquisition of Bintulu Port, securing a majority stake in Affin Bank, and rebranding MASwings into AirBorneo to ensure affordable air travel.

“We have taken control of the skies with our own business model, which I cannot reveal, as it involves economic strategy,” he said.

He expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for recognising Sarawak as the country’s sole gas aggregator.

“Now, we are moving forward with participation in the entire oil and gas ecosystem with a certain degree of autonomy. This progress is possible because GPS is strong, united, and works together,” he stated.

The Premier reaffirmed Sarawak’s commitment to national cooperation while ensuring the Sarawak’s development remains a priority. “We are not greedy; we are willing to share for the sake of the nation and Sarawak. That’s why we collaborate,” he said, urging GPS component parties—PBB, SUPP, PDP, and PRS—to safeguard trust within the coalition.

“With a strong government, we bring change to people’s lives and the ecosystem of Sarawak,” he concluded.

Minister of Utility and Telecommunication Dato Sri Julaihi Narawai, Deputy Tourism Minister Dato Sebastian Ting, Deputy Local Government Minister Datuk Michael Tiang, Deputy Education and Innovation Minister Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee, and SUPP Youth Central chairman cum SUPP Bawang Assan chief Kevin Lau were among the distinguished guests present.— DayakDaily
