KUCHING, July 16: The dilapidated road connecting Lawas with Temburong, Brunei, cannot be maintained because it involves sovereignty issues, says Foreign Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.

However, he said that the Malaysian government will continue negotiations with Brunei to resolve the matter.

At the same time, he made it clear that any signing of a demarcation agreement involving maritime or land borders will only proceed after taking into account matters that do not touch sensitivity and the state.

“Whether land border or maritime, this involves sovereignty issues, (so) this issue is very sensitive,” he said in Dewan Rakyat today as reported by TVS.

He said this in response to a supplementary question by Datuk Henry Sum Agong (GPS-Lawas), who asked about the government’s initiative to upgrade road connectivity between Lawas and Temburong.

Meanwhile, he said the government would take precautions before signing any agreement so that all parties, especially the Sarawak government, could manage the infrastructure in the area.

“When we agree, the parties involved will sit together to solve the matter,” he said. — DayakDaily
