KUCHING, March 25: Hackers breached Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd’s (MAHB) digital system in a recent cyberattack and demanded US$10 million, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim revealed today.

According to a news report by Free Malaysia Today (FMT), speaking during the 218th Police Day celebration in Kuala Lumpur, Anwar said the attack occurred ‘one or two days ago’ and stressed that the government refused to comply with the ransom demand.

“Yesterday, we discussed the cyberattack that seriously impacted MAHB. The discussion focused on how to resolve the matter, including the hackers’ demand for US$10 million,” he was quoted as saying.

“I didn’t wait five seconds before immediately saying no,” he added.

Anwar warned that the country’s security would be compromised if its leaders gave in to such criminal threats, whether from domestic or foreign actors.

While he did not provide further technical details on the breach, the prime minister underscored the urgent need for increased funding for the Royal Malaysia Police and Bank Negara Malaysia to boost their cyber defence capabilities. — DayakDaily
