KUCHING, March 2: Deputy Premier of Sarawak Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas hopes that the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) will address the flood issues in certain parts of Debak as soon as possible.

He also hoped that the fortifications being built in Kampung Lalang, Kampung Bungey, and Kampung Babu will be completed soon to prevent severe inevitable flooding which occur in these three villages when heavy rain coincides with a high tide.

“Flood mitigation projects are already planned and will be developed, but there were implementation issues that I believe have now been resolved.

“However, I believe that once the fortifications in Kampung Lalang, Kampung Bungey, and Kampung Babu are completed, we will be able to quickly resolve the flooding issue in those villages,” he told reporters during his visit to the temporary evacuation centre (PPS) at Dewan Millenia in Debak today, according to a statement.

He revealed that at of 9pm yesterday, a temporary evacuation centre (PPS) at Dewan Millenia was opened for those displaced by flash floods in Kampung Lalang, Kampung Bungey, and Kampung Babu.

“This PPS is housing 213 flood victims from 51 families, and we can see that relevant government departments and agencies have been deployed to assist the flood victims and ensure that they are comfortable while staying in the PPS.

“We do our best to ensure that flood victims are as comfortable as possible and that they have enough food and water.

“We also asked the welfare department to devise a plan to ensure that infants have access to suitable milk formula,” he added.

Uggah said he is pleased that the relevant government departments and agencies are able to work efficiently to ensure the safety and comfort of flood victims.

“Sarawak currently has six flood relief centres (opened), and I hope that there will be no more additions. The weather appears to be improving as well,” he added.
