KUCHING, April 30: All parties must pay immediate attention to the issue of climate change because it is occurring not only in foreign countries but also in Sarawak, says Deputy Premier of Sarawak Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian.
Dr Sim made this point before officiating at the āMake Climate Cool Againā event today at the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Community Hall on Jalan Padungan here in conjunction with Earth Day 2023.
The āMake Climate Cool Againā event is organised by MBKS in collaboration with NakedWonders and Sarawak’s Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) at the MBKS Community Hall from April 29 to May 8.
āThe issue of climate change requires immediate attention because, believe it or not, climate change is occurring in Kuching, Sarawak, as evidenced by the extreme weather conditions we have endured over the past few months.
āWe have had flooding, excessive rainfall, and extreme heat this month, and all of this has not only caused us to suffer, but also caused a great deal of damage and loss, necessitating a great deal of money to repair the damage.
āAs a result, we need everyone to work together and pay close attention to the issue of climate change, which is affecting not only foreign countries such as Europe, the United States, and remote islands, but also Sarawak,ā he stressed.
He encouraged all parties to play their part, not just with words but also with actions.
Dr Sim, who is also the Minister for Public Health, Housing, and Local Government, highlighted that environmental issues, especially climate change, are very close to his heart.
In addition, he suggested that everyone can contribute to raising awareness and promoting environmental sustainability.
In fact, according to Dr Sim, in order to achieve the sustainable development goals (SDGs), more programmes like today’s event must be held over time.
During the event, the Deputy Premier also launched a new mobile application called āiBuyBackā in conjunction with MBKSā āBuy Backā recycling campaign to promote recycling culture in the community.
āiBuyBackā not only provides accurate information regarding the location of recyclable collection programmes, but also makes it easier for people to participate in recycling efforts.
To further the cause of environmental sustainability, Dr Sim also expressed hope that the new application would be adopted by other local councils across Sarawak.
Among others present at the event were MBKS mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, MBKS deputy mayor Hilmy Othman, Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Tan Kai, and Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap. ā DayakDaily
