KUCHING, April 8: The Unit for Other Religions (Unifor) Complex on Jalan Ong Tiang Swee here is hopefully set to open by the third quarter of 2025, according to Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian.

In a post on his official Facebook page, Dr Sim said that although the building obtained its Occupation Permit (OP) in Oct 2024, it remains unoccupied due to ongoing renovation works, particularly for the office spaces.

“The building features an exciting new convention facility for banquets and meetings in Kuching.

“Hopefully, both the Unifor office and the convention facilities will be open by the third quarter of 2025,” he said after visiting the building with trustees from the Sarawak Unifor Charitable Trust (SUCT) to monitor renovation progress on the Trust’s office.

Dr Sim, who is also Sarawak Minister for Public Health, Housing, and Local Government (MPHLG), said the visit to the office on the ninth floor of the building was led by Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, who also serves as the Minister in charge of Unifor.

He further clarified the public confusion between two entities: Unifor, the Unit for Other Religions under the Department of the Premier of Sarawak, and SUCT — a private, non-governmental trust that owns the building.

“Looking forward to welcoming representatives of the six religions to the Trust Office — a place that will soon become a home for all.

“It is understood that Unifor, under the Department of the Premier of Sarawak, will rent up to four floors for its new office, relocating from its current location at Wisma Satok,” he added.

For the record, construction of the Unifor Complex — which occupies a three-acre site — began in 2021. This landmark facility aims to foster unity among Sarawak’s religious communities, celebrate their faiths, and support various income-generating activities.

The 10-storey complex features a green building design, a nine-storey office tower, a conference hall with a 1,000-person capacity (expandable to 1,200), and 285 parking spaces. — DayakDaily
