KUCHING, April 28: A working paper for the implementation of maintenance and upgrading works for rural roads will be tabled to the Sarawak State Cabinet for approval, said Deputy Premier of Sarawak Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.
According to a TVS news report, Uggah said former logging tracks are now considered village roads with low maintenance costs.
“We have decided to propose to the State government to upgrade these roads from village roads to state roads.
“With such an upgrade, the allocation from the Malaysian Road Records Information System (Marris) that can be used will be higher, amounting to RM3,000 per kilometre for repairs,” he said when met after visiting the Batang Rambungan bridge project site in Lundu today.
Uggah, who is also Sarawak Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development, said the current priority is to identify damaged and poorly maintained bridges.
“We have already identified the number of bridges involved and the costs for the road upgrading. Now we are only awaiting the tabling of the working paper to the Cabinet for approval,” he said.
Among the rural areas involved in the upgrading project are Bintulu, Miri, Kapit, Baram, Belaga, Skrang, Tatau, and surrounding areas. — DayakDaily
