Deputy Premier: Sarawak has identified 77 areas at high risk of erosion

KUCHING, Dec 25: The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) has identified 77 areas at high risk of erosion throughout the State, says Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.

He said he had instructed all divisional engineers in the State to discuss with Bomba on studying the identified areas.

“After that, we will decide whether preemptive measures should be taken to prevent that (area) causing problems.

“If it indicates a risk to the local folks, we will warn them,” he told reporters after hosting a Christmas open house at his residence in Taman BDC here today.

Uggah who is also the Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development (MIPD) further said that the Sarawak Public Works Department (PWD) is now on full alert to repair any roads or bridges badly damaged due to flood.

“On social media, there are many complaints from the northern zone. So we are aware of this and my department is doing its very best to ensure that any damaged infrastructure shall be repaired immediately,” he added.

Uggah also disclosed that Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) has reactivated its State operation room since Dec 23. The SDMC chairman said the division-level and district-level committees would be in full alert mode until the end of February next year.

Earlier, Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and his wife Puan Sri Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tuanku Bujang paid a visit to Uggah at the latter’s residence.

Also present were Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah; Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Law, MA63 and State-Federal Relations) Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali; Betong MP Dr Richard Rapu; Satok assemblyman Dato Ibrahim Baki; and Sarawak Federation of Chinese Associations president Dato Richard Wee. — DayakDaily
