KUCHING, Aug 1: Brunei is one of Sarawak’s most important partners in trade and tourism, as evidenced by the RM1.89 billion generated through bilateral trade in 2025.
According to Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, the strong economic ties underscored the significant potential for both sides to deepen cooperation in trade, investment, tourism, and emerging industries.
“I have been informed that, last February, more than 15 companies under the Brunei Economic Development Board (BEDB) explored opportunities for collaboration with Sarawak.
“Two days ago, 24 companies from Sarawak participated in the Reciprocal Trade Delegation to Brunei, where they took part in business matching sessions and industrial visits.
“As a result of these efforts, we will witness the exchange of several Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) and Memoranda of Agreement (MoA) between companies from Brunei Darussalam and Sarawak,” he said during the Program Citarasa dan Tautan Budaya Sarawak-Brunei 2026 in Brunei on Friday night (July 31).
Awang Tengah, who is also Minister for International Trade, Industry, and Investment, said he was happy to see several agreements that show the growing trust between businesses in Sarawak and Brunei, which include the following:
- MZZK Enterprise becoming the exclusive distributor of Sara-Bif Corned Beef Products in Brunei.
- A partnership between RFM Global Corporation and Durung Nur Agro Makanan dan Minuman to produce and sell Terung Asam Jam.
- A collaboration between IRIX Sdn Bhd and Dynamik Technologies Sdn Bhd to expand digital and ICT services.
- Nationfood Sdn Bhd from Sarawak partnered with Riza Group from Brunei, allowing Riza Group to distribute Nationfood’s tempe chips in Brunei and expand into Zamboanga, Philippines.
“Together, these agreements will create new business opportunities, encourage innovation, and strengthen economic cooperation for both Sarawak and Brunei,” he said.
He also noted the participation of 350 delegates at the Sarawak–Brunei Entrepreneur Roadshow 2026, which included 200 from Brunei.
“All these developments demonstrate that the relationship between Sarawak and Brunei has continued to evolve from a long-standing friendship into a strategic partnership that delivers tangible benefits to entrepreneurs, investors and the people of both sides.
“I am confident that, with a spirit of mutual trust, complementarity and shared benefits, Sarawak and Brunei will continue to strengthen trade, investment and economic cooperation for our shared prosperity,” he said. — DayakDaily
