KUCHING, Aug 24: Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak officers must strengthen ferry safety enforcement to ensure passenger welfare, says Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.

As Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development (MIPD), he highlighted the need for strict adherence to operating regulations by ferry operators.

“We have a total of 12 ferry crossings across the State. All passengers boarding them must wear life jackets,” Uggah emphasised in a statement today.

He urged enforcement officers to take immediate action against operators who fail to comply with safety regulations, stressing that non-compliance should not be tolerated.

“Any misconduct by operators should not be condoned. It would be tragic if an accident occurs and lives are lost due to our inaction,” he added. — DayakDaily
