KUCHING, Sept 1: Deputy Premier Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian has hinted at the possibility of increasing the allowance allocated to councillors if Sarawak’s economy continues to thrive.
Dr Sim, who is also Minister for Ministry of Public Health, Housing and Local Government (MPHLG), said at the moment, every councillor is given a certain amount of funds per year.
“If you (councillors) do well and as our economy grows, definitely Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg will start asking me if the allowance of the council’s has been increased or not.
“So Premier already, in theory, has started thinking about increasing it,” he said when officiating at the closing ceremony for the ‘Briefing on Post Covid Development Strategy (PSDS) 2030 for councillors held at Penview Convention Center in Demak today.
He added that it is important for them to do their part as the government representative in the local government.
“We must ‘Jaga Sarawak baik-baik’ (take good care of Sarawak),” he said, in quoting the late former chief minister Pehin Sri Adenan Satem.
Also present were Deputy Ministers for MPHLG Datuk Dr Penguang Manggil and Michael Tiang, MPHLG permanent secretary Elizabeth Loh and other distinguished guests. — DayakDaily.
