SERIAN, Feb 1: The flood situation in Sarawak is improving, says Deputy Premier Douglas Uggah Embas.

He noted that the 6.1m king tide did not result in rising water levels that caused floods, adding that the water level along the Pan Borneo Highway has also subsided.

“I am happy to note that the flood situation in the State has improved, but we will remain vigilant and monitor the situation (flood),” said Uggah, who is the chairman of the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), during his visit to the temporary evacuation centre (PPS) at Dewan Ranchan today.

Uggah was also glad to note that all the PPS are operating smoothly with adequate mattresses, pillows, and food, and with medical staff, adding that two PPS in Bau have been closed.

Meanwhile, Uggah said the number of PPS in seven divisions in the State stands at 63 from 3,696 families, with 12,692 victims to date.

He also told reporters that data collection for public and private properties affected by the floods will start tomorrow (Feb 2).

“We have instructed all Residents to provide us with data on the damages incurred for public and private properties. The earlier we have it (data), the better it is for us to act,” Uggah said.

He also said that the welfare department is sending food to the flood-affected Kampung Merangkai, adding that there are 20 locations in Serian where the roads need repair.

“JKR (Public Works Department) is now in full swing to repair all the damaged roads caused by flood,” Uggah said. — DayakDaily
