KUCHING Aug 26: Although South Korea doesn’t have much in terms of natural resources, its people compensate for it by being hardworking, and this is among the reasons why it is now a high-income nation, says Deputy Premier Dato Dr Sim Kui Hian.
Therefore, Dr Sim hoped that Sarawakians could change their mindsets and emulate South Koreans by working hard to transform the economy.
“South Korea was once a middle-income nation, but the people’s attitudes brought the nation to where it is now industrious and a high-income country.
“They work from 6am to midnight six days a week, and we can follow this, but we have to change our mindset as it is part of transforming our economy—to work diligently so that we too can be a high-income State faster.
“Nothing is easy and free as we all have to work hard to earn a living and make the State become more developed,” he said during the launching of the Annyeong Ku-Chingu campaign at The Spring Shopping Mall today.
Dr Sim, who is also Minister of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government Sarawak, said that he once sent one doctor from the heart centre here to South Korea who came back with a lasting impression of the country’s work ethics.
“South Korea is so advanced and good at many things like electronics and engineering. All these are due to hard work,” he said.
During the event, he also applauded the management of The Spring Shopping Mall for organising the campaign which he described as timely.
“South Koreans are coming to Sarawak because the country is investing in the State. They are looking for land in Kuching to build schools. Last year, South Korea and Sarawak signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the H2biscus Project related to green hydrogen and ammonia in Bintulu.
“We want to foster a good relationship with South Korea to learn and emulate these hard-working people and their nation. I want us all to be healthy so that we can carry on working hard, build a business, and strengthen the economy to be a high-income State,” said Dr Sim.
PE Land Group of Companies managing director James Ling and The Spring Shopping Mall general manager Christie Ling were present during the event.
