SIBU, Dec 16: Sarawakians are urged to exercise caution in light of the recent surge in Covid-19 cases, particularly in Peninsula Malaysia, to prevent a potential major outbreak that could strain healthcare facilities and dampen upcoming festive celebrations.

Noting the significant increase in Covid-19 cases in Peninsula Malaysia, Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation, and Talent Development Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee emphasised the importance of proactive measures to avoid a sudden spike in Sarawak.

“While I hesitate to categorise it as a definite increase, the data does indicate a rise. Here in Sarawak, we appeal for preventive measures to avert a situation akin to the Peninsula’s.

“However, in the event of another outbreak, we are already well-versed in its patterns. Thus, there’s no need to delay the implementation of preventive actions, given our familiarity with cleanliness protocols, mask usage, crowd avoidance, and the likehe advised during a pre-Christmas dinner organised by the Youth Brigade and Rumah Panjang N55 Nangka Women’s Bureau here last night (Dec 15).

Assuring the State’s readiness, Dr Annuar mentioned that Sarawak is well-equipped to handle a potential outbreak, thanks to established standard operating procedures (SOP) based on past experiences.

He urged the public to stay vigilant, especially during the festive season.

On the event, he commended the organizers for inviting people from different communities to celebrate together.

Commending the organisers for bringing together individuals from diverse communities, he emphasised Sarawak’s commitment to fostering inclusivity.

“In Sarawak, we consistently maintain such a harmonious atmosphere. Be it during Gawai, Hari Raya, or Chinese New Year, we celebrate together. Hence, our emphasis must be on tolerance and mutual respect for one another,” he added. — DayakDaily
