MUKAH, July 20: Doctors and medical practitioners assigned to Sarawak should report in so that they can see the healthcare needs in the State firsthand while effectively evaluating if the region is conducive for their roles.
Deputy Health Minister Lukanisman Awang Sauni urged contract doctors who have been offered positions in Sarawak not to reject these opportunities but to take the initiative to explore the region.
“There are still 200 remaining vacancies out of 800 offered positions in Sarawak.
“I want the doctors offered jobs in Sarawak to report themselves first so that they can personally see the situation in Sarawak, the working environment and healthcare needs in the region, whether it aligns with their expectations and conducive for their roles as medical officers,” he said in a news report by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) yesterday (July 19).
Lukanisman raised this during a working visit to Mukah Hospital on Tuesday (July 18). He was accompanied by Tellian assemblyman Roystan Valention as well as Sarawak Health Department director Dr Ooi Choo Huck, its deputy director (Public Health) Dr Veronica Lugah and deputy director (Medicine) Dr Azlee Ayub.
The Sibuti MP also highlighted that the construction of Type 3 health clinics in nine districts in Sarawak under 13th and 14th Malaysia Plan will take some time to complete.
“Federal government notes that the requests for the construction of the clinics are the wishlist under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) for all district to have a health clinic,” he said.
Additionally, Lukanisman acknowledged the need to upgrade facilities at the Balingian and Kuala Balingian clinics.
Meanwhile, Roystan hopes the Ministry of Health (MOE) can include pre-natal and maternity services at Mukah Hospital as well as consider upgrading the dilapidated infrastructure and additional medical machines for the hospital.
On the implementation of Obsterics and Gynecology, Lukanisman said it is expected to take place in November this year. — DayakDaily
