KUCHING, March 13: Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government Michael Tiang is on a two-week study mission in Australia, searching for inspiration for the Bukit Assek Redevelopment Plan.
He said he and the entourage to Australia led by Deputy Premier Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian would be bringing back more knowledge and ideas to improve Bukit Assek, especially its water supply and management system.
Tiang added that the Bukit Assek Redevelopment Plan, which was briefed to Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg on January 22, has yet to be finalised.
“Because in the briefing, our Premier was not satisfied with some parts of the plan. He strongly viewed that redevelopment must restart from ground zero,” he said.
Tiang, who is also Pelawan assemblyman, said once the redevelopment plan is completed, neighbouring residents in Nangka, Pelawan and Dudong would reap benefits from it too.
The project would be huge, he said, probably taking up to 20 years for implementation as it aims to change the entirety of Sibu while giving it a facelift.
“By then, Sibu will become the most modernised city in the 21st century. Sibu will not be lagging behind anymore.
“I’m really excited, and I also hope that whatever knowledge obtained from Australia could be applied in Sibu and quickly get the project started,” he said during a Facebook live last night (March 12).
Tiang said he was streaming from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and would be heading to Melbourne first.
While he will not be in Sibu for the next two weeks, he assured the people that he would still be reachable through WhatsApp.
He said his team at the Pelawan service centre can be contacted at 012-760 9822 should residents need any assistance. ā DayakDaily
