KUCHING, Sept 10: Preparation of venues and facilities for the Malaysia Games (Sukma) in Sarawak next year is going as planned, says Dato Gerald Rentap Jabu.
Rentap, who is Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development, said they have held a meeting with the Sarawak Sports Council (MSNS) to identify venues that need to be repaired and upgraded.
“We are now in the process of selecting the contractor for the works,” he told a press conference at the Sarawak Lawn Tennis Association (SLTA) building at Jalan Crookshank today.
On June 13, Federal Minister of Youth and Sports Hannah Yeoh announced that Sarawak is the host for Sukma 2024, which will be held from Aug 17 to 24.
He added that the challenge with the coming Sukma 2024 is to accommodate about 10,000 athletes and officials for the event.
As such, he also hoped that all the sports association involved would give the ministry their support to ensure the Games would be held smoothly.
Meanwhile, in the 39th Premier Sarawak Cup, which is part of the ITF World Tennis Tour Junior J100 (J3) Championship final, Bill Chan from Singapore took the top spot after beating Lieven Mietsuch from Germany with 0-6, 7-5 and 6-4, in the Boys’ Single category.
In the Girls’ Single category, Kanon Sawashiro from Japan was crowned champion after defeating Lidia Podgorichani from Thailand with a straight set of 6-3, 6-1.
The prizes were presented by Rentap with Sarawak Lawn Tennis Association (SLTA) president Datuk Patrick Liew. — DayakDaily
