SIBU, April 9: Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government II Michael Tiang is ready to help the family of a shipping mechanic who died after falling into a river on March 31.

In a statement today, he informed that the eldest daughter of the deceased, who has just completed her Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM), might want to forgo her further studies and find a job instead to support her family.

“I encouraged her to contact my service centre if she needs further assistance. Also, the University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) provides free education for foundation-level studies, and it offers many other benefits.

“So I told the family that if they need further help, they could always contact my service centre (and) see what we can do to help,” he said.

Tiang, who is also Pelawan assemblyman, further said he had presented some assistance in terms of food aid to the family.

He also said that Social Security Organisation (Socso) also gave food assistance to the family.

“As the deceased is registered with Socso, the family would also receive monthly contributions from Socso,” he added.
