KUCHING, Jan 2: Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) stands ready to open an additional temporary evacuation centre (PPS) in Sungai Lumut if the current PPS at Surau Ar Rahman reaches full capacity.
DBKU mayor Dato Hilmy Othman said the Surau Ar Rahman PPS in Kampung Sungai Batu is currently housing 65 flood victims.
He said the district office determines whether victims at the Surau Ar Rahman PPS are transferred to the Sungai Lumut PPS, which can house over 100 people.
“My advice to the residents in this area is to always be vigilant and if instructed to move, do not delay and follow the instructions of the authorities in the field,” he said in a news report by Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS).
Meanwhile, Hilmy said DBKU will conduct a technical survey to address flooding issues in Sungai Batu, particularly the problem of stagnant floodwaters.
He said the decision was made after receiving feedback from community leaders during his visit to the Surau Ar Rahman PPS yesterday.
The matter will be escalated to the Sarawak government so a survey can be carried out with the relevant agencies.
“God willing, in the future, our party will be together with the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) to discuss this matter.
“So, I thank the community leadership earlier because they were able to voice practical matters on the ground for us to resolve issues.
“We will work together with other agencies to address this problem,” he said.
During the visit, Hilmy also delivered basic assistance to flood victims at the PPS. — DayakDaily
