KUCHING, Nov 23: Dayak activist Peter John Jaban has called off a protest which he had planned to stage after being advised by the police to do so.

He said as he was planning the protest to allow Sarawakians to show Gabungan Parti Sarawak their displeasure over the ruling coalition’s decision to form the Federal government with Perikatan Nasional (PN) which consists of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) and Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS).

Peter John told DayakDaily that he had the intention to inform the police of what he was planning to do. However, before he could, the police had sought him out and advised him not to do so.

“Many Sarawakians had voted for GPS in the 15th General Election (GE15) and they were disappointed with GPS’ decision to form Federal government with PAS.

“PAS dominated PN, so Sarawakians are all quite worried that if PAS were to form the government, it will dominate PN. This is the main concern of the Chinese and Dayak in Sarawak.

“The purpose of the protest which we had cancelled was to remind GPS that if it were to carry on with its decision, then it may risk losing the support of all those who had voted for the coalition during this parliamentary election, as well as those who voted for it in the previous Sarawak Election.

“If GPS refuses to listen to its supporters, it may risk losing even more seats in the next Sarawak Election,” said Peter John.

He said he was just a “bell-ringer” and was in no position to advise GPS what to do.

“However, do listen to the people and consider the wish of your supporters before it is too late. There are many who voted for you. Please do not let us down,” said Peter John. — DayakDaily
