KUCHING, Aug 7: Sarawak Democratic Action Party (DAP) chairman Chong Chieng Jen wants Puncak Borneo MP Datuk Willie Mongin to resign, following the latter’s decision to leave Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) to join Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB).
He stated this in response to Willie’s acceptance into PBB.
“If Willie Mongin is a man of honour, he should resign, because he also voted for the anti-hopping law.
“He took advantage of the fact that the Federal Constitution amendments have not yet taken effect and hopped.
“Although he is legally entitled to it, I believe we can all agree that it is morally wrong,” he told reporters after the (DAP)’s ‘Outstanding SPM Achievement Award Ceremony’ at the Sarawak DAP headquarters (HQ) here today.
Chong emphasised that, while the anti-hopping law has not yet taken effect, it should not be taken advantage of.
“Isn’t that the very Act that we have legislated? The anti-hopping law? So that is the exact act (party hopping) that we have legislated against, and when we legislated against such an act, we got unanimous support in Parliament.
“Why? Because party hopping after the election is just morally wrong,” he stressed.
Furthermore, Chong stated that the anti-hopping law will take effect following publication in the gazette.
He added that it will take place before the 15th Malaysian General Election (GE15), as stated under the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed by Pakatan Harapan with the federal government.
Earlier, Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, who is also the PBB president, confirmed that Willie’s application to join PBB as a member has been accepted. — DayakDaily
