In a TVS news report, Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Labour, Immigration and Project Monitoring), Datuk Gerawat Gala, said the competition is more than a celebration of beauty—it is a vital platform to promote and preserve Dayak customs, arts, and languages.

“The intricate costume designs, eloquent speeches, and captivating performances reflect the deep cultural wealth and traditional values of our community. This event is a meaningful avenue to highlight the unique identity of the Dayak people,” he said when officiating the pageant at the FORUM Hall on Friday (June 13).

Gerawat emphasised that Gawai is not merely a harvest celebration, but also a symbol of unity among Sarawak’s diverse ethnic groups, aligned with the enduring spirit of Segulai Sejalai (together in unity).

This year’s pageant held special significance, as it marked the first time the event was hosted in Miri. The newly completed FORUM Building, which served as the main venue, stands as a proud symbol of the Orang Ulu community.

“We are grateful to the Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, for granting five acres of land and RM37 million in funding for the construction of this landmark, now a prominent feature of Miri city,” Gerawat said.

He also called on the contestants to embrace their roles not only as pageant winners but as cultural ambassadors and role models in preserving Sarawak’s rich heritage.

Telang Usan assemblyman, Dato Dennis Ngau, hailed the event as a testament to the dedication of the Gawai Tradition Carnival 2025 Committee in elevating cultural heritage.

“This programme strengthens cultural pride while also fostering unity among the people. Gawai must continue to be a platform that brings Sarawakians together. Our future depends on unity, collaboration, and shared commitment to development,” he said. — DayakDaily
