DAP S’wak chief assures service centre to continue helping flood victims

Chong Chieng Jen

KUCHING, March 18: Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak chairman Chong Chieng Jen gave his assurance that his service team will continue to answer calls for help from those affected by the flood today.

Chong said he is currently in Kuala Lumpur attending the DAP National retreat and has directed his service team to help deliver food to the Flood Relief Centre at Kampung Sinar Budi Baru for the victims who were evacuated from their houses due to the flash flood.

“After a few hours of heavy rain, many places in Kuching were flooded. The victims of Kampung Sinar Budi are still at the centre because their houses are still partly submerged even though in other places in Kuching, the water level has receded after the rain stopped around noon,” he said in a statement today.

Meanwhile, the Stampin MP said the flood was a sign of failure by the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) and municipal councils in managing the drainage systems in Kuching city.

He also said it happens that both portfolios fall under the ministry of Deputy Premier Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian.

“We call upon Dr Sim to be more hands-on, responsible, and accountable for the portfolios he is in charge of,” he added. — DayakDaily
