KUCHING, Sept 23: Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak has urged Sarawak Energy to take steps in ensuring all faulty electricity meters installed at houses are replaced to avoid inconveniencing customers.
Michael Kong, special assistant to Chong Chieng Jen, raised this after helping a member of the public address an overcharged electricity bill, which stemmed from a faulty meter.
“I recently visited an old lady living at Jalan Jamboree to address a complaint. She stays in the house with her grandson. With no air-conditioning units, her usual monthly electricity bill was only around RM30.
“But in the past two months, her electricity bill shot up to RM160 and RM380. So we helped to immediately notify Sarawak Energy which then dispatched technicians to the house,” he said in a statement today.
Kong said upon checking and running a test at its laboratory, Sarawak Energy had confirmed that the old meter at the house was faulty without being tampered with and a replacement of a new meter has also been done.
“We are pleased with the thorough inspection. The previous charges have also been reversed with the excess payment credited into the houseowner’s account.
“But Sarawak Energy should relook at all possible faulty meters to avoid inconveniencing customers,” he added.
Kong also advised homeowners to check their bills regularly and should there be any inaccuracy, they should bring the matter to the attention of the utility provider for them to look into the matter. — DayakDaily
