DAP man: Scavengers creating hostile and dangerous environment for public at BDC Recycling Centre

Scavengers are seen searching for items they can resell from among the goods dropped off by members of the public at BDC Recycling Centre.

KUCHING, Jan 16: The intrusive actions of a group of scavengers at the BDC Recycling Centre is creating a hostile and dangerous environment for members of the public.

According to Special Assistant to Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak chairman Chong Chieng Jen, Michael Kong Feng Nian in a statement today, lately, the scavengers are getting bolder where they will rush any car which appears to be stopping to drop off items for recycling at the centre.

“At this BDC Recycling Centre, there is a group of ragpickers who would just sit in front of the centre and collect unwanted goods from the public.

“Goods that are usable and sellable will be kept by them and the rest will be left at the centre,” he said.

Kong pointed out that currently, the recycling centre in BDC is being managed by Persatuan Pencinta Kitar Semula Taman BDC of which Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap is its legal advisor.

From the incidents, Kong opined, it is obvious that Persatuan Pencinta Kitar Semula Taman BDC has not been able to manage the recycling centre properly.

“It is high time that the council take back control of centres such as the BDC Recycling Centre and manages it correctly for the safety of the public.

“Proper management would also go a long way to fixing this eyesore and instilling confidence and comfort within the people to recycle,” he added. — DayakDaily
