KUCHING, April 27: The lack of safe walking lanes and poorly maintained sidewalks such as broken curbs and missing guardrail are putting the lives of pedestrians and public transportation users at risk, particularly children, the elderly, and people with disabilities who are more vulnerable to accidents.

Sarawak Democratic Action Party (DAP) member Michael Kong emphasised that inaction by the authorities to repair and upkeep these facilities including bus stops is a cause for concern.

“The safety of pedestrians and public transportation users should be a top priority for the authorities.

“The failure of authorities to address these issues is unacceptable and urgent action is needed to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all citizens,” he said in a statement today.

Kong, who is also a special assistant to Sarawak DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen, expressed disappointment that no action has been taken to fix the pedestrian walks and the bus stop in front of a Sesco substation at Mile 7 here which was in a dire state even after two months since he raised the issue.

“With the sidewalk in poor condition, pedestrians are forced to walk on the roadways with motor vehicles. This is particularly dangerous for children, the elderly, and people with disabilities who are more vulnerable to accidents,” he added.

Stressing that it is the authorities’ responsibility to ensure that sidewalks are well maintained and safe for use, Kong said that it is time for leaders to recognise the urgency of this matter and take the necessary steps to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all citizens.

“I have lodged another complaint on this and urge the authorities to act on this urgently for the convenience and safety of the public,” he added. — DayakDaily
