KUCHING, Dec 7: George Lam, special assistant to Pending assemblywoman Violet Yong, is urging Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR) to tar seal Jalan Batu Kawah as soon as possible to reduce traffic jam.

He said the ongoing road and drainage upgrading project at Jalan Batu Kawah is causing massive traffic congestion during peak hours and endangering road users, especially motorcyclists.

Lam said he had witnessed an accident involving a motorcyclist due to the uneven road conditions during a visit to the project site.

“I was there to inspect the progress of the project and witnessed a motorcyclist falling down because of uneven roads.

“Luckily the motorcyclist only suffered minor injuries. This also shows that the project has seriously affected the safety of road users,” he said in a statement today.

Lam explained that Jalan Batu Kawah is the main road used by many residents in Batu Kawah and even Bau to travel between school, work and their homes.

He therefore urged JKR Sarawak to cut down project time by having workers to work night shifts and expedite the process.

“At the same time, I have contacted the person in charge of the project to understand more about the upgrading process and seek ways to reduce the construction period so that the people of Batu Kawah will not suffer from traffic jams,” he added. — DayakDaily
