KUCHING, March 24: Local authorities have been urged to take immediate action to upgrade and fix the concrete walking pavement and safety railings along the monsoon drain behind Lorong 6/2 Hui Sing Garden as its poor condition is hazardous to pedestrians.
Michael Kong, special assistant to Chong Chieng Jen, raised this after no action was taken by local authorities despite a complaint filed four months ago.
“The concrete floors are cracked with big holes waiting to swallow the legs of pedestrians. The railings are also no longer safe because they are unstable due to the cracked ground.
“This is a walking pavement serving the residents of houses along the monsoon drain, and yet it is in a shameful condition,” he said in a statement following a visit to the area today.
The Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak member said he was made aware of the poor and unsafe conditions of the walking pavement last year during the Sarawak Election period.
“So we made a complaint with the authorities back then, while hoping the issue could be resolved.
“It is utterly disappointing and unacceptable to see nothing was done for the past four months,” he added.
Kong pointed out that he had filed another complaint with the local authorities and hoped they would step up their efforts to carry out repair and maintenance to improve the basic infrastructure in the interest of the people. — DayakDaily
