DAP Bandar Kuching and Stampin to help register those in need of food during MCO

KUCHING, March 29: Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak’s service centres for Bandar Kuching and Stampin will assist to register names and contacts of families who are in dire need of essential food supplies during the Movement Control Order (MCO).

However, the registration exercise will only be done via online, WhatsApp messages and phone calls.

DAP Sarawak chairman Chong Chieng Jen in a statement today revealed that initially, the two service centres wanted to send food supplies to the affected families but are unable to do so as the government has forbid all non-governmental organisations (NGOs) from delivering to individual households.

“As such, we will forward all the names and contacts which we’ve collected to the Welfare Department for the latter to supply essential food items to the families.

“Undeniably, the MCO has a huge immediate impact on many families, especially small and petty traders, hawkers and daily-paid workers. Although Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin stressed that no one will be left out by the stimulus package, we believe many will be left out when it comes to the implementation. There will also be delays in its implementation,” Chong asserted.

Giving an example of delay, Chong noted the cash handouts to B40 families are intended to be given out in April (only two days from today), but the exact mechanism for the rolling out of the plan has yet to be made known.

He also noted that for some families, the immediate challenge is to put food on the table everyday.

“This is especially so for the daily-paid workers who have little or no savings. To them, when work stops, income stops. The first 14 days of MCO is definitely tough on them, but the second 14-day MCO period will be a disaster.

“As such, the team from DAP Kuching and Stampin service centres will do our small part by helping to collect the names of those in urgent need of essential food supply to be delivered to their houses and forward them to the relevant government agencies. We will also do the follow-up to ensure that these families do receive the food items from the relevant government agencies,” he added.
